Character

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Each year in the Fall, Marshall Academy of the Arts students have the opportunity to view an assembly called Rachel's Challenge. It is a very powerful and emotional character building assembly. The assembly focuses on "kindness and
compassion" and sets the foundation for the year for our students. Please speak with your child about Rachel Scott's five challenges and her essay, "My Ethics, My Codes of Life."

If you would like additional information about this amazing assembly please visit  www.rachelschallenge.org

Omar Awaida Character Award

The award was created in remembrance of Omar because of the indelible effects of his character that impacted others. The wake of his passing left a void that was felt by his friends, classmates, teachers, acquaintances, parents, and even those that only knew of him through stories.

A specific example of Omar's kindness was his inclusion of many special needs students in his circle of friends. He made sure they were in his group on field trips and ate lunch with them as well.

These stories of unabashed true acts of kindness were done so without any extrinsic incentives; other than to feel the the joy by others knowing that it was simply the right thing to do. In short, the award recognizes those that will carry on his legacy of human decency and pay it forward so that we continue to #livelikeomar.

The inaugural award recipients were Colin and Jamie, who were voted by their peers and recognized as those that best exemplified Omar's character, kindness, and compassion.
